Just guessing from the context, “barang” in bahasa Malaysia means something like “piece”.

I was guiding a Hungarian at an airport check in counter, when he suddenly popped out ,
” What is B-A-R-A-N-G ? ”
while pointing his finger to a signboard bearing instructions on luggage weight limit and stuff.
I said to him, BARANG generally means ” stuff ” or ” thing ” or ” item ” in Malay, and the word on the signboard specifically refers to the passengers’ luggage.
He said that in his native language, Hungarian ( Magyar ), BARANG means ” to speak nonsense ” or ” to speak jokingly ” !
We both laughed.
In Khmer, it means “French” but more generally is used as “foreigner”.
