I’ve finally taken the plunge and invested in a real camera: a Nikon D40X. My point-and-shoot Olympus C-740 was reaching the end of its life: I had worn off the rubber eyepiece from having it pressed against me so often, and was beginning to wear a hole in shutter button. I was also annoyed at how poorly it performed in low light. The things that you don’t notice when you begin taking photos like chromatic aberration, barrel distortion and the weird blue cast that sometimes falls over my food shots began to grind.
I haven’t had much of a chance to play with the Nikon yet because it was night, but above is the North Melbourne Town Hall.
Cool, Phil! Look into getting this lens: Nikkor 35mm f/2. When put on that cam it will be the equivalent of a 50mm ‘normal’, and is the lens I use for the vast majority of my food pics.
I love the comment that ‘this lens doesn’t scream “rob me”‘. I’m sure that your average cutpurse does a quick assessment of focal length before mugging you.
I’m actually looking at this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 as the next purchase – (sadly) the Nikkor lens doesn’t autofocus on the D40x, only AF-S and HSM lenses.

Mazeltov! Go the 30mm prime. Prime lenses are such great value, especially if you’re mostly using them for indoor product-type shots, rather than as a walk around lens.
That said, at the moment I’m using the same sharp, if noisy, Tamron zoom everyone else uses on their Canon 350 and 400ds, and it’s remarkably useful.
Also, buy yourself a flash. Trust me, you will never look back. I’m lost without my 580ex at the moment.
